Home Mission - Northern Baptist Association
Just Imagine seeks to take our Baptist churches on a three-year journey together to capture a fresh passion and understanding of what Home Mission is all about.. If you thought my report last year was encouraging then you really do need to hear this…… I am able to inform you that we as an Association raised £108,573.26p in 2010 (as against £103,713.79p in 2009 ), which I calculate is about a 5% increase. In the present economic climate that is a fantastic achievement. God is Good! This was to your credit as churches and also to those who raised extra monies by doing something more, Table Top Sales, and a few personal donations were all part of this fantastic total. (For this reason I am encouraged to set our 2011 Target at £108,000 which in the present financial climate is a modest budget increase.) “If every Baptist church donated at least 5% of income, Home Mission would have an EXTRA £2 MILLION to give back to churches.” BUGB Treasurer. 29 churches now use the direct payments scheme for their Home Mission giving which helps everyone to budget more easily. Lets try and get ALL churches onto this scheme and so cut down on cheques and postage etc. Home Mission Sunday should be a fixture in all our calendars and we want to continue to encourage the FIRST SUNDAY IN NOVEMBER (please note the change) to be the NBA Home Mission Sunday (in conjunction with the Ministry Exchange Sunday). This is a good time to raise awareness of Home Mission, and our shared life together, churches can use the resources found on DVD’s, as well as other resources to be found on our NBA website, the BUGB Website and this includes the HMF Boxes and Used Stamp collecting etc. I attended a number of meetings in London, Birmingham and Didcot on the National Home Mission Development Team We are again focussing on Getting our message out and will hopefully be Piloting ‘Just Imagine If’ in 2 Associations. I would also again request that Treasurers get monies in before mid December each year at the latest. I have already received a few requests to attend church services and fundraising events and would like to again offer my services to all NBA churches to promote Home Mission, probably the best occasions are when we Pray together. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to All NBA Churches for their continued sacrificial support of their Home Mission Fund. If you would like any resources please contact myself or go to the NBA and BUGB websites to order or download good quality items. Suggestions for fundraising: 1. Social events where tickets are sold or an entrance fee charged. Examples: line dancing, firework display, quiz night, treasure hunt, karaoke evening, board games night, concert, art exhibition, barn dance, pantomime. 2. Events involving food – money can be raised by charging for the food Examples: big brunch, barbecue, pancake evening, teddy bears picnic, cake sales, candlelight supper, cheese and wine evening, cream-tea, curry night. 3. Sponsored events Examples: marathon, bible reading, hymn singing, aerobics, bike-ride, losing weight, silence, abseiling, walk and toddle 4. Buying and selling Examples: auction (items and/or promises, bring and buy sale, ‘home-made’ sale, car boot sale, second-hand bookstall, nearly-new clothes 5. Competitions – entrants pay a fee and a small prize is awarded Examples: fancy-dress, cake-baking, races, flower-arranging or how about ‘worst-tie’? 6. Other ideas face-painting, Easter-egg/Christmas gift hunt, arts and crafts afternoon (have a go at something new), car-washing, fancy-dress football, open-gardens, mile of coins. 7. Many churches meet as house groups. If you don't already do it, why not have a coffee jar in the middle of the table, where people can drop in change when they take their tea and coffee. The money collected can be added to your church's contribution. 8. "Children are a gift from the Lord". Why not invite parents in your church to join a Birthday scheme. Each year you send their child a birthday card and invite the parents to make a small (say £5) gift to Home Mission as an expression of thanks. (Check people want to join the scheme before sending a card!) 9. Home Mission supports a whole raft of youth officers and other youth activities. Why not invite your young people to arrange sponsored events to help support these vital ministries. 10. Some people prefer to manage their money through a bank account. If twenty people set up a standing order for just £5 per month -this would raise £1,200 for Home Mission in a year even more if it was Gift Aided. The church then pays this EXTRA amount to Home Mission.
